"Mexicans"

We are known for going up north and taking people's jobs,
drug cartels, corrupt government, and a horrible economy.
These things and more give us a bad reputation,
us Mexicans I mean.
But not all is as bad as it seems.

We are people that inspire goals and dreams just like anyone else.
We have solid morals and values.
We have amazing cuisines!
We love our families and this sometimes results to packed homes.
And we have a rich and diverse culture.

We are people that despite all of the bad things going on we keep going and we never give up.
From Cesar Chavez fighting for workers rights in the U.S to
Pancho Villa fighting in the revolutionary war.
We are more than just factory workers, gardeners, and servants.
We are Mexicans! We are Dreamers! Seekers of opportunity!

  1. I really enjoyed the passion behind your poem. Your last stanza just throws how you feel out there and it makes your poem very powerful and draws your reader in. I also like how you are still positive outlook about this even though many people are against your race.

  2. I think you did a great job of summarizing a lot of issues that are at the forefront of American (and Mexican) news right now. In the last few years, the only type of press that Mexico has gotten in the United States is negative. It's refreshing to hear a perspective from you that is not all wrapped up in the politics of nationality, but focused on the really vibrant history and cultural traditions that are a part of your family. I also laughed a little bit at the irony of mentioning Cesar Chavez and his civil rights activism in the United States - I wonder what he would have to say about the situation today?

  3. Glad to read a positive outlook. I also think placing a line about values next to a line about food was useful in demonstrating that Mexican culture can supply both abstract and concrete essentials to another culture. I do not know for sure if percolating that idea was part of your design, but it works for me.

  4. This poem has a strong, positive spirit and voice. You name the difficult things, then counter with the positives. I think this poem would be even stronger if you added some specific details. What are some items of the cuisine that you could describe in mouth-watering detail? What are some examples of the rich and diverse culture?
